The highlight of our fall season was our Annual RTF Gravel Ride. I drove to Cochran’s under gray skies and pouring rain seeking music on Sirius XM (Dave Matthews) to try to cheer myself up. It kind of worked! As I drove closer, the rain subsided to more of a misty and cool wetness with road puddles here and there. Arriving at Cochran’s, I was greeted by many riders who were not discouraged (at least they did not show it) by the wetness. More riders showed up and we had about forty strong. As we reached the planned start time of 10 a.m., the rain subsided, although the roads remained wet. To maximize safety on the roads, we split into two groups with the speedier group heading out a few minutes before the less speedy group. Throughout the ride, the weather conditions improved, and roads dried and autumn views opened up. The spirit of Richard cleared the skies once again! The condition of the gravel sections was excellent. Most riders opted for the 44-mile loop while at least two young women opted for the 57-mile loop. Upon return to Cochran’s everyone was treated to burgers and brats topped with grilled veggies by RTF’s in-house cook, “CMO” (Chris Morrisey of Cool Motion Outdoor Sports, Bristol). Not only is CMO great at grilling, but he can also tune your bike and your skis. If you are in the Bristol area, stop in at his shop!
