2025 Richard’s Ride

BAM!! ⛈ AND CRACK! ⚡️ Those were the sounds and the drenching wetness that accompanied the riders of Richard’s 70 as they ascended “Richard’s Surprise” on Buck Hollow Road.  I guess it had to happen after nine years of favorable weather.  On our tenth edition of Richard’s Ride (Powered by VBT and many other sponsors) we experienced what can only be described as marginal, at best, weather conditions.  Heavy downpours, lightning, thunder, and quarter-sized hail descended on the day we celebrated Richard’s spirit with our cycling community.

Well, we did celebrate!  I was surprised by the strong proportion of the over 200 riders who had preregistered and appeared and ready to ride (not so many “day of” registrations this year).  Riders came with smiles on their faces, dressed for the weather, and pointed their once-clean bicycles into the storm.

The Ride

Each field all had a good number of riders. Positive attitudes and courage abounded!

The Routes

  • 70-mile road route
  • 30-mile road route
  • 40/50-mile gravel route
  • 5/15-mile road (adults and children) routes

Our Mountain Bike Group headed out toward the Chamberlain Hill Trails.  On return, the mud-covered bikes and bodies told part of the story of their ride.  Toothy smiles radiated through caked-on facial mud, telling the remaining part of the story – despite the ridiculous conditions, the spirit of fun and camaraderie was contagious.

Celebrating Richard Tom

Everyone returned safely to Cochran’s and, as the storm subsided, we were treated to rays of warming sunshine so that riders could enjoy our post-ride meal outside, in comfort.  I don’t recall anyone complaining about the weather.  What I do recall is the image of everyone enjoying their post-ride meal and sharing experiences and stories of the day – certainly a day to remember when, once again, we celebrated the legacy and life of Richard Tom. Many thanks to our sponsors and especially to the many volunteers who contributed their time on a less-than-ideal day.

Our mission is to honor the legacy of Richard Tom by creating opportunities for all to discover the community, adventure and joy of cycling.
