Fat Bike Rally 2026

Postponing an event based on weather certainly comes with risks. Our Richard Tom Foundation (RTF) Fat Bike Rally was originally scheduled for February 8 at Catamount Outdoor Family Center (COFC). Well, winter roared in with sub, to near zero, temperatures predicted for that day. The prospect of frozen hands and feet, low attendance, and general discomfort resulted in a decision to postpone. We had some feedback appreciating the postponement to Sunday, February 22nd. On this rescheduled date, winter graced us with a most beautiful day with temperatures near 30 degrees, no wind, sunny skies, and a fresh coating of snow.

Andy (COFC) did a great job of grooming so that trails were in perfect condition for our group rides. RTF helped COFC purchase their snow-dog groomer several years ago, still in use. We greatly appreciate our partnership with COFC and the return of Amanda (COFC Program Director). COFC offered free trail use and fee-based RTF responsibility for access to their fleet of fat bikes. All went smoothly throughout the day.

We offered two group rides which were well attended with a mix of experienced and “never-ever” riders. The result? Many smiles! With fresh snow gracing the limbs of trees and beautifying the forest, things couldn’t have been better. Special thanks to Justin Bennett, Tim Post, and Jim Stover for helping to coordinate and lead ride groups. Yours truly, set up a parallel sprint slalom course to add a little spice at the conclusion of group rides. I had to coerce a few pairs of riders to try it, but it was fun to watch with each race taking only about one minute.

As group rides returned to the COFC “Hub” they were treated to servings of warm chili prepared by RTF Board members. The chili must have been good because there was nothing left at the end of the day! YT declared himself the winner of the “Chili cookoff” even though it was my first time ever making chili!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the RTF annual Winter Fat Bike Rally. This event serves as a connection between RTF and the cycling community, nested between our Fall Gravel Ride and our Spring Richard’s Ride.
